From handling plastics to touring the county recycling facility, the Green Team at Ingleside at King Farm has prioritized embracing environmentally friendly practices within the community.
Ingleside at King Farm is a not-for-profit, older adult life plan community in Rockville, Maryland. Residents can engage in a wide variety of wellness and lifelong learning opportunities, and many have found their passion in the resident-run Green Team committee.
Green Team members have gone above and beyond to enact community waste reduction, recycling, and composting initiatives. They champion educating residents and staff on best practices through a weekly contribution to the resident newsletter. They plan events for residents and staff to underscore the importance of green initiatives, such as a recent visit to the Shady Grove Recycling Center Facility to learn how Montgomery County sorts, processes, and bales approximately 300 tons of recycling material each week. They also design their creative visuals for the trash and recycling rooms to educate residents about what can and cannot be recycled.
The community and county have celebrated their exemplary efforts. The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (MCDEP) awarded the Ingleside at King Farm group their annual Green Team Committee of the Year award.
According to the MCDEP, “This group has gone above and beyond the efforts of others to maintain the quality of life in their multi-family communities, working diligently to engage others to actively participate in their waste reduction, reuse, and recycling efforts. This team serves as examples for others to emulate.”
“We care about the environmental impact of our neighbors and community,” says a member of the Green Team. “By changing small habits and being conscious of our environmental footprint, we feel proud of ourselves for contributing to a greener Montgomery County.”
